What's Happening This Week----March 18th Through March 22nd

Everyone did an awesome job on their "End of the Quarter Skills Test".  I am so very proud of all the K-1 students.  The students always read their reading homework assignment  , to me, upon returning to school. Each student is doing a nice job when reading and sounding out the words.  I can see and hear the students using the phonics rules, that they have been learning, to try to figure the words that they have forgotten.  Thank you, parents for listening to your child read to you.  Reading at home makes a great difference for these early learners.

The K-1 students have been practicing their manners all school year---for example, when telling what milk they would like for snack time, the students say---chocolate please and thank you.  The students are doing an awesome job on that manner.  Now, the students are learning that when someone says "Good Morning " to them or :Hi" they need to says "Good Morning" or "Hi" back in return.

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of the sound that the letter "Vv" makes----keyword----vest.  The students will learn that the letter "Vv" is a consonant letter.  Then, the students will learn the sound that the letter "Jj" makes----keyword----jar.  The students will learn that the letter "Jj" is a consonant letter.

Reading----The Kindergarten students will be reading words that contain the letter "Vv" and "Jj".  Phonics booklets will be read.  The booklet-----"Pig's Jet"-----will be read.  The students will be bringing home sight words flash cards, that they have made and read at school.  After practicing those flash cards at home, I will have each student re-read the flash cards to me, for extra word practice. The flash card words will be:  said, have, and, you, one, four and ten.

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will be printing the letters----"Vv" and "Jj".  Phonics sentences will also be printed.

Writing----The Kindergarten students will be writing a sentence to go along with a picture that they will color.  The students will learn the sentence rules----"A sentence begins with a capital letter, makes sense and ends with an end mark".

Math----The Kindergarten students will begin a unit on "Take Away".

Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn that "We Belong to a Church" and "We Pray as Jesus Did".

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will learn the "Diagraph ai", "Combination ar", "Diagraph ch", "Combination or" and "Combination qu".

Reading----The First Grade students will read the story----"On the Job With Martha Smith".  Then, the students will make flash cards over the "Words to Remember" and read the booklet-----"Billy Brown's Lunch".  Then, the students will read the story -----"Little Bear's Friend".

English----The First Grade students will review the sentence rules.  Then, the students will learn about----"Exclamations" and "Titles for People".

Spelling----The First Grade students will learn spelling words that contain "Long A Words".  This week's spelling words are:  play, rain, say, way, sail, day, mail, stay, may and pain.  The Challenge Words are:  today and afraid.  The Special Writing Words are:  to, soon and hear.

Writing ----The First Grade students will be writing their own story and spelling word sentences.

Math-----The First Grade students will be learning about "Carrying" in addition problems, "Number Families" and "Plane and Solid Figures".

Religion----The First Grade students will learn about the "Eucharist" and "We Celebrate Mass".

Science----The students will begin a unit on "Matter".  The students will learn that there are three kinds of matter----solid, liquid and gas.

What's Happening This Week----March 11th Through March 15th

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of the sound that the letter "Dd" makes----keyword----dog.  The students will learn that the letter "Dd" is a consonant letter.  Then, the students will learn the sound that the letter "Vv" makes----keyword----vest.  The students will learn that the letter "Vv" is a consonant letter.

Reading----The Kindergarten  students will read phonics word lists, flash cards and the phonics booklet-----"I Did It".  The students will also be reading----reading worksheets .

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will be printing the letters  "Dd" and "Vv".  Flash cards  and phonics word sentences will also be printed.

Math----The Kindergarten students will "Explore Halves" and  "Explore Fourths" . The students will also learn about "More Likely/ Equally Likely/ Less Likely".  Addition problems will also be done.  The students will continue their study of numbers.

Religion----The Kindergarten students will continue to learn about "We Are Made to be Family" and
"We Are Made to Grow in God's Love".

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will learn about the "Diagraph ay",  the "Diagraph ai"  the "Combination er", the "Diagraph ch" and the "Combination or".

Reading----The First Grade students will make flash cards with vocabulary words and then read the booklet----"How to Make a Face".  Then, the students will read the story----"On the Job With Dr. Martha Smith".  Then, vocabulary flash cards will be made and the booklet----"Billy Brown's Lunch" -----will be read.

English----The First Grade students will be reviewing past lessons that they have learned.  The students will be reviewing----the naming and action part of a sentence, telling sentences, sentence rules, nouns, special nouns, verb and subject agreement, pronouns, is-are and was-were.   Then, the students will be writing "Correct Sentences".

Writing----The First Grade students will be writing their own sentences and stories.

Spelling----The First Grade students will learn about "Mixed Vowels".  The spelling words this week are:   mad, made, hop, hope, pin, pine, bit, bite, hid and hide.  The Challenge Words are: plan and plane.  The Special Writing Words are:  girl, boy and house.

Math----The First Grade students will review "Money"----"Count on by Dimes",  " Count Mixed Coins" and "One Dollar" ----how to make one dollar.  Then, " Certain, Possible and Impossible" terms will be learned.  The students will also learn about the terms----"More Likely/ Equally Likely/ Less Likely".   

Religion----The First Grade students will learn about the "Eucharist".  The "Eucharist" means----we give thanks.  Then, the students will learn in their "Growing in Love" religion book,  that we should choose God's love.

Science----The students will learn about "Earth's Neighbors's-----moon and planets.  Then, the student will begin a unit about----"Matter".

What's Happening This Week----March 4th Through March 8th

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of the sound that the letter "Yy" makes----keyword----yarn.  The students will review that the letter "Yy" is a consonant letter.  Then, the students will learn the sound that the letter "Dd" makes----keyword----dog.  The students will learn that the letter "Dd" is a consonant letter.

Reading----The Kindergarten students will read their Dr. Seuss book----"Hop on Pop"----to me.. Every time I send a reading assignment home to be read, I listen to each student re-read that assignment.  This procedure helps me to reinforce the idea that  a student should try to sound out a word that the student forgot.  The students will also read phonics word lists and the booklet----"Ben is Ten".  Phonics word flash cards will be made and read.  The flash card words will be:  four, one, ten, into, you, has.  Phonics word phrases and sentences will be read.

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will print the letters "Yy" and "Dd".  Phonics word sentences will also be printed.

Math----The Kindergarten students will continue to learn "Number Bonds" { Number Families } for a certain number.  For example----the number "6"----the Number Bonds or Number Families are:  0,  6, 6; 1,5,6; 2,4,6 and 3,3,6.  Then, the students will realize that addition problems can be made from these number bonds/number families.  The students will also learn about-----"Pictographs", "Bar Graphs", "Equal Parts" and "Equal Symmetry".

Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn about "Lent".  Then, in the "Growing in Love" Religion Book, the students will learn about "Good and Bad Choices".

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will learn about the "Combination er", "Trigraph  igh", "Compound Words", "Diagraph ai" and ""Diagraph ay".

Reading----The First Grade students will read the booklet----"One More Time".  Vocabulary flash cards will be made before the students read their booklet----"One More Time"----as a way to review the vocabulary words.  Then, the story----"My Robot"----will be read.  Vocabulary flash cards will be made for the words that will be in the next booklet to be read----"How to Make a Face".

English----The First Grade students will learn about "Opposites"----such as happy and sad.  Then, the students will do a review unit, to review past English concepts that gave been studied.

Spelling----The First Grade students will continue their review spelling unit words.  Then, the students will do a unit to learn "Long Vowel Words".  The Spelling words are:  same, line,, stone, smile, note, side, wake, woke, wide and wave.  The Challenge Words are:  beside and space.  The Special Writing words are:  love, any and many.

Math----The First Grade students will continue their study of "Number Bonds" or "Number Families".  The students will learn that for a certain number----for example the number 9----many "Number Bonds" can be made to make the number 9.  The students will learn that the "Number Bonds" for the number 9 are:  0,9,9; 1,8,9; 2,7,9; 3,6,9 and 4,5, 9.  Then, the students will realize that they can use these "Number Bonds" to make addition and subtraction problems. The students will also continue their study of "Measurement"----"Weight" and "Pounds".  Then, the students will decide which tool to use to measure certain objects-----"Should you use a measuring cup, scale, ruler or thermometer to measure the temperature of the air outside?"  Next, "Money" will be reviewed.

Religion----The First Grade students will learn about "Lent".. Then, the students will learn about the "Eucharist".

Science----The students will learn about "The Sky Above" and "Earth's Neighbors".

What's Happening This Week----February 26th Through March 1st

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of the sound that the letter "Ee" makes----keyword----elephant.  Then, the students will learn the sound that the letter "Yy" makes----keyword----yarn.  The students will learn that the letter "Ee" is a vowel letter and the letter "Yy" is a consonant letter.

Reading----The Kindergarten students will be reading phonics word lists.  The students will also be reading the phonics booklet----"Ben is Ten".. The students will be making flash cards, with phonics words on them .  These flash cards will be sent home to be studied.  The flash card words will be:  four, one, ten, into, you and has.

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will be printing phonics word sentences.  The letters "Ee" and "Yy" will also be printed.

Math----The Kindergarten students will learn about----"Picture Graphs", "Pictographs" and ""Bar Graphs".  Addition problems will also be done.

Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn in their "Growing in Love" Religion Book, that God "Made Us to be Together" and that "We Are Made to be Holy".

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will learn about the "er" sound as in butter, the "igh" sound as in high , "Compound Words" and the "ai" sound as in rain.

Reading----The First Grade students will read the story----"Tell Me a Story".  Then, the "Words to Remember" will be in the booklet----"One More Time"----that the students will read.  Next, the students will read the story----"My Robot".  The students will make flash cards with the "Words to Remember".  Flash cards will also be made containing the following words:  could, would, should, was, good; one done, come, some; where, what, who, when and how now, cow, brown, down and town.

English----The First Grade students will continue their study of "Adjectives".  Then, "Opposites" will be studied.

Spelling----The First Grade students will continue to study the Spelling Words that contain the "Long Ee Sound".  Then the students will study Spelling Words that are review words from past units.

Math----The First Grade students will learn about "Adding Money", "Temperature", "Cup and Pints" and "Cups, Pints and Quarts".

Religion----The First Grade students will about "God and Human" and "God's Gifts to Me".

Science----The students will learn about the "Seasons----Fall and Winter".  Then, the students will begin a unit on "The Sky Above".

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of the sound that the letter "Cc" makes----keyword----cat.  Then, the students will learn the sound of the letter "Ee"----keyword----elephant.  The students will learn that the letter "Cc" is a consonant letter and the letter "Ee" is a vowel letter.
Reading----The Kindergarten students will be reading phonics word lists and phonics phrases .  The Kindergarten students will also be making flash cards, to be re-read at home as homework.
Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will be printing the letters "Cc" and "Ee".  Phonics word sentences will also be printed.
Math----The Kindergarten students will review counting objects and printing the number for those objects, positions in line and the terms----before, between and after.  Then the students will learn about "Tally Charts" and "Picture Graphs".
Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn, in their "Growing in Love" Religion Book, that "We Are Made to be Like Jesus" and "We Are Made to be Together".

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will learn about the sounds that the "Vowel Yy makes----"Ii" as in cry and "Ee" as in sky.  Then, the students will learn about the "er" as in butter and "igh" as in eight.
Reading----The First Grade students will be reading the booklet----"Eating Yummy Cake".  Then the students will read the story  "At Home Around the World".  Next, the booklet "One More Time" will be read.  Then, the story----"Tell Me a Story"----will be read.
English----The First Grade students will continue their study of "Adjectives".
Spelling----The First Grade students will be learning words that contain the "Long Ee Sound".  The Spelling words this week are:  he, see, she, tree, me, feet, we, be, green and peek.  The "Challenge Words are:  three and street.  The "Special Writing Words" are:  good, back and into.
Math----The First Grade students will review----"Tally Marks", "Charts" and "Pictographs".  Then, the students will learn how the use a ruler and measure in "Inches".  The "Calendar" will be studied next.  Then, the students will learn how to "Add Two-Digit Numbers".
Religion----The First Grade students, in their "Growing in Love" Religion Book, will learn about "God and Human" and about "God's Gifts".

Social Studies----The students will continue to learn about the Presidents----"Lincoln and Washington".

Science----The students will learn about "Clouds".  Then, the students will learn about "The Seasons---"Spring and Summer" and "Fall and Winter".

What's Happening This Week----February 11th Through February 15th

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will be reviewing the letters and their sounds that they studied while I was gone.  The letters to reviewed are: "Kk", "Bb", "Uu" and "Zz".  Then, the students will learn the sound that the letter "Cc" makes----keyword----cat.  The students will learn that the letter "Cc" is a consonant letter. 
Reading----The Kindergarten students will be reading the phonics booklet----"Zip".  Sight words will be studied and sight word flash cards will be sent home to be reviewed ----as a homework assignment.  The students will also be reading phonics word lists.
Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will be printing the letter "Cc", their first and last name and phonics word sentences.
English----The Kindergarten students will learn the "Sentence Rule".  A sentence begins with a capital letter, makes sense and ends with an end mark.  A telling sentence--- is a sentence that tells something---ends with a period.
Math----The Kindergarten students will learn about "Fewest and Most".  Then, the students will review the terms---"As many as", "Fewer", "Equal Sets" "More" and "Fewest".  "Number Patterns" will also be studied.  The students will also be reviewing "Money"----to "Identify the Coin and the Value of the Coin"----a penny, nickel, dime and quarter. The students will make money flash cards.  These money flash cards will be sent home to be studied,
Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn about "Saint John Bosco"----one of God's special people.  Then, the students will learn that "We Are Made to be Like Jesus"----in their "Growing in Love" Religion Book.

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will learn that the letter "Yy" is a vowel letter  at the end of a word.  The letter "Yy" can have the "Long E Sound"  as in "cry" or the "Long I Sound as in "sky".
Reading----The First Grade students will be reviewing the stories that they have read while I was gone----"A Bed Full Of Cats" and "Me on the Map".  The students will be reading the booklets----"Patch's Treat" and "Baseball"---they contain the vocabulary words from the stories----"A Bed Full of Cats" and "Me on the Map"  The students will also be making and reading flash card vocabulary words form the stories.  Then, the students will read the story----"At Home Around the World".  The booklet----"Eating Yummy Cake"----will also be read.
English----The First Grade students will learn about "Adjectives".  Adjectives tell about a noun.
Spelling----The First Grade students will be learning words that contain the "Long Oo Sound".  This week's spelling words are:  go, home, rope, so, joke, bone, hole, no, stove and poke.  The "Challenge Words" are:  hello and alone.  The "Special Writing Words" are:  done, come and some.
Math----The First Grade students will continue doing "Subtraction Rocket Math" worksheets.  "Fact Families" will be studied.  The students will review "Tally Marks, Charts and Pictographs".  Then, the students will begin a unit on "Measurement".  The students will "Compare Lengths" and measure by "Inches"----using a ruler.  The students will also review "Money" ----"Identify the Coin and the Value of the Coin"----   a penny, nickel, dime and quarter. The students will make money flash cards.  These money flash cards will be sent home to be studied.
Religion----The First Grade students will be learning that "God Made Us" and "God Loves Us" from their "Growing in Love" Religion Book.

Social Studies----The students will continue to review facts about "Abraham Lincoln".  Then, the students will learn about "George Washington".

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of the sound that the letter "Ff" makes----keyword----fish.  Then, the students will learn the sound that the letter "Rr" makes----keyword----rabbit. The students will learn that the letters "Ff" and "Rr" are consonant letters.

Reading----The Kindergarten students will read phonics word lists and the phonics booklet----"Frog Ran".

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will be printing the letters "Ff" and "Rr".

Math----The Kindergarten students will learn to "Identify and Write the Numbers 19 and 20"; "Addition Problems----adding 2, 3 and 4 to numbers".

Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn about why "We celebrate Christmas".

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will learn about the "Final Syllables---"ble", "fle", "ple" and "dle".

Reading----The First Grade students will read the stories----"Tomas Rivera" and "On the Way to the Pond".  The students will also read the booklet----"One Night".

English----The First Grade students will continue their study of "Verbs".  Then, the students will learn about "Nouns and Verbs" and "Pronouns and Verbs".

Writing----The First Grade students will write a story about a "Castle" and "The First Christmas".
The students will also be writing their own spelling word sentences.

Spelling----The First Grade students will learn spelling words that contain "st".  This week's spelling words are:  nest, fast, stop, must, step and best.  The Challenge Word is:  "stick".  The Special Writing words are:  " your ", " their " and  " other ".

Math----The First Grade students will learn about "Venn Diagrams", " Counting by 2's " and  "Ordinal Numbers to 31st ".  Then, the students will begin a unit about "Money---Nickels and Pennies ".

Religion----The First Grade students will learn about why "We Celebrate Christmas".  Then, the students will learn about the "Seven Sacraments ".

Science----The students will continue their study of "Our Earth".

Crafts----The students will make crafts centered around the "Christmas" theme or the "Advent" church season.
