Mrs. Eickhoff"s Kindergarten / First Grade Classroom

What's Happening This Week-----August 23rd Through August27th Kindergarten Phonics----The students have bee studying the sound that the letter "Ll" makes-----keyword----lion. The students know that the letter "Ll" is a consonant letter. Next, the Kindergarten students will learn the sound that the letter "Oo" makes----keyword----octopus. The students will learn that the letter "Oo" is a vowel letter. Reading----The Kindergarten students are learning to read color words and number words. The students are learning the color and number words by cheerleading these words. Handwriting----The Kindergarten students have been printing the letter "Ll'. The students are learning the correct way to sit, how to hold the pencil correcly and how to hold the paper with the other hand that does not hold the pencil. The students are learning that the letters sit on a line and do not float in the air. Next, the students will learn how to print the letter "Oo". Math----The Kindergarten students have been learning how to "Sort" objects---by color, size and shaape. The students have also learned the number "1"----count "1" object and how to printhow the number "1". Next, the students will learn the number "2"----putting "2" objects in a group and to print the number "2". The students learn these numbers through number poems and by skywriting the numbers in the air. The number poems are: One long stick, "!" is fun. Around and back on the railroad track, the train goes two, two two. Religion----The Kindergarten student have learned that "God Created the World". Next, the students will learn that "God Gave Us Light"----sun for daytime light and mon and stars for night time light. First Grade Reading----The First Grade students have been reading word family words. The word families are the "at" and "an" word family. The students have been reading the story, "The Hat", in their reader. The booklet "Jan's Cat" was also read by the students. In these small booklets, the "Vocabulary Words" that were introduced in the reader's story are reviewed through reading the booklet. The next story to be read will be "Sam and the Bag". The booklet to be read will be "Al and Max". The students will be reading the word family words "ap", "in" and"ig". Spelling- Last week the First Graders learned spelling words that contained the "Short Aa" sound. This week the students will learn spelling words that contain the "Short Ii" sound. This week's spelling words are: in, pig, did, sit, six and big. English----The First Graders will learn "What a Sentence Is?" and the "Naming Parts" of a sentence. Writing----The First Graders will write their own sentence about a hat that they colored. The students will also be writing their own spelling word sentences. Math----The First graders have been learning to read number words "zero through nine". Now, the students will learn the number words "ten through twelve". The students are learning the number words through cheerleading the number word. The students are also learning about "Addition". The students have studied the saying: part plus part equals whole. Addition "Rocket Math" worksheets are also being done by the First Graders. Religion----The First Graders have learned that "God is Our Father". Next, they willlearn that We Believe in the Blessed Trinity". Social Studies---The students have been studying "American Symbols". Science----The students have studied "Our Five Senses". Now, the students are studying "Living and Nonliving Things".

What's Happening This Week---- March 16th Through March 20th

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of the sound that the letter "Cc" makes----keyword----cat.  Then, the students will learn the sound that the letter "Ee" makes----keyword----elephant.

Reading----The Kindergarten students will read "Sight Words", "Phonics Words" and Phonics word sentences.  The students will read the phonics booklet----"Ben is Ten".

The students will individually read these reading items to me.

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will print the letters "Cc" and "Ee".  Phonics word sentences will also be printed.

Math----The Kindergarten students will learn about "Patterns", "Calendar" and "Ordering Numbers".  The students will begin a unit on "Subtraction".

Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn that "We Honor Mary".  The students will also learn that "God the Father Gives Us Jesus".  The students will be making a "Stations of the Cross" booklet.

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will review the "Long Aa Sound".  Then, the students will learn that "y" can = a long Ee sound as in the word----any.

Reading-----The First Grade students will read the stories----"Me on the Map" and "At Home Around the World".  The students will also read the booklets----"Baseball" and "Eating Yummy Cake".

English----The First Grade students will learn about "Adjectives".

Spelling----The First Grade students will learn spelling words that contain the "Long Vowel Sound" and "Mixed Vowel Sounds".

Math----The First Grade students will learn how to "Tell Time to the Half Hour".  The students will also learn about "Patterns" and the "Calendar". The students will learn how to "Regroup in Tens and Ones when doing addition problems"----in other words the students will learn how to "carry" in addition problems. Rocket Math addition and subtraction problems will continue to be done. 

Religion----The First Grade students will learn that "The Church Welcomes New Members Through Baptism" and that "We Are Followers of Jesus".

Science----The students will learn about "Matter---- it can be changed by heating or cooling".  Then, a unit on "Energy" will be started.

Crafts----This week's crafts will center around St. Patrick's Day.

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study on the sound that the letter "Zz" makes----keyword----zebra.  Then, the students will begin their study of the sound that the letter "Cc" makes----keyword----cat.  The students will learn that both the "Zz" and the "Cc" are consonant letters.

Reading----The Kindergarten students will read "Sight Words" and "Phonics Words".  Phonics words and Sight Word sentences will be read.  The booklet---- "Zip"---- will be read.

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will print the letters "Zz" and "Cc".  Phonics word sentences will also be printed. 

Math----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of "Money".  The  "Calendar" will be taught and "Ordering Numbers".

Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn that "We Are Made to be Like Jesus" and that "We Are Made to be Together".

First Grade

Reading----The First Grade students will read the stories----"A Bed Full of Cats" and "Me on the Map".  The students will also read the booklet---- "Baseball".

English----The First Grade students will learn that "Words Can Look the Same".  The students will also review past items that have been learned---- "Verbs", "Contractions", "Sentence Rules", "Naming Part" and  "Action Part" of a sentence.

Spelling----The students will review past spelling words.  Then, the students will have a "Long Vowel Review".

Math----The First Grade students will count "Dimes and Pennies" and "Quarters and Pennies".  The students will learn about "Telling Time to the Half Hour" and the "Calendar".

Religion----The First Grade students will learn that "God Loves Us" and about "God and Human"---God made human.

Science----The students will continue their study of "Matter".

What's Happening This Week----March 2nd Through March 6th

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of the sound that the letter "Uu" makes----keyword----umbrella.  The students will review that the letter "Uu"is a vowel letter.  Then, the students will learn the sound that the letter "Zz"makes----keyword----zebra.  The students will learn that the letter "Zz" is a consonant letter.

Reading----The Kindergarten students will read "Sight Words" and "Sight Word Sentences".  Phonics word lists will also be read.  The students will read "Zz" words.  Some of the "Zz" words to be read are:  fizz, fuzz, zip, zap and buzz.  Some of the "Phonics Words" to be read are:  up, tub, sun, rug, bus, hug and fun.  The students will also read the booklet----"Zip".  The students will also read inserts from a Dr. Seuss book. ----"Hop on Pop".

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will print the letters "Uu" and "Zz".  Phonics word sentences will also be printed.

Math----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of "Money" and "Seasons".  Then, a unit on "Telling Time to the hour"  and the "Calendar" will be started.

Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn that "We Are Made to Love" and that "God Made Us to be Like Jesus".  The students will also learn about the "Stations of the Cross".

First Grade

Reading----The First Grade students will read the booklet----"A Load of Stuff" will be read.  The "Words to Remember" from the story "The Fox and the Stork" are reviewed in the booklet.  Then, the students will be given their next book in the First Grade reading series.  The stories "A Bed Full of Cats" and "Me on the Map".   The booklet-----"Patch's Treat" will be read.  The students will also read inserts from a Dr. Seuss book.

English----The First Grade students will learn about "Contractions" and "Words That Look the Same".

Spelling----The First Grade students will learn spelling words that contain the "Long Ee" sound.

Writing----The First Grade students will write "Sight Word" sentences and Spelling Word sentences.

Math----The First Grade students will continue their study of "Money" and "Seasons".  Then, the students will learn about "Telling Time to the hour and half hour".  The "Calendar" will also be studied.  Addition and subtraction "Rocket Math" will continue to be done.

Religion----The First Grade students will learn that "God Made Us" and God Loves Us".  The students will also learn about the "Stations of the Cross".

Social Studies----The students will learn about Dr. Seuss.

Science----The students will continue their study of "Seasons".  Then, the students will start a unit on "Matter".

What's Happening This Week----February 24th Through February 28th

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will learn the sound that the letter "Uu" makes----keyword----umbrella.  The students will learn that the letter "Uu" is a vowel letter.

Reading----The Kindergarten students will read words that contain the letter "Uu".  Some of the "Uu" words to be read will be:  run, sun, fun, tub, bun, sub, cub, cut and cup.  "Sight Words" and "Phonics Word Sentences" will continue to be read.  The students will also read the booklet----"The Big Trip".

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will print the letter "Uu" and phonics word sentences.

Math----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of "Money".  Everyday the students play "Fair Trade Money".  For example, the students have to give me "5 pennies" in exchange for a "nickel".  The student has to tell me what each "coin's" name is and how much their is worth.  The students are also "Fair Trading Money"----5 pennies and one nickel for a dime or 10 pennies for a dime or two nickels for a dime.  The students will also learn about "Seasons".

Religion----The Kindergarten student will learn about "Mary" .

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will learn about the "Long Oo Sound" ----oa as in boat, ow as in bow and "o" as in no.

Reading----The First Grade students will read the stories-----"The Fox and the Stork" and "A Bed Full of Cats".  The students will also read the booklet----"A Load of Stuff ".

English----The First Grade students will learn about "Contractions" and "Words That Mean the Same".

Spelling----The First Grade students will learn words that contain the "Long Oo Sound ".  The spelling words this week are:  go, home, rope, so, joke, bone, hole, no, stove, poke, hello and alone.  The "Special Writing Words " are:  come, done and some.

Math----The First Grade students will continue their study of "Money".  The students will also do addition and subtraction "Rocket Math" worksheets.  "Fractions" will be reviewed.

Religion----The First Grade students will continue their study of the "Sacraments".

Science----The students will learn about "Seasons".  Then, the students will begin a unit on "Matter".

What's Happening This Week----February 17th Through February 21st

A special thanks to all who sent snacks for our classroom St. Valentine's Day Party.  A great big thank you to the room parents who could come to help at the party and for all the fun games and craft project that were done.

I want to thank everyone for the nice St. Valentine's Day cards and yummy candy.

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will begin their study of the sound that the letter "Bb" makes----keyword----balloon.  The students will learn that the letter "Bb" is a consonant letter.

Reading----The Kindergarten students will continue to read "Sight Words and Sight Word Sentences". "Bb" words will be read.  The "Bb" words to be read are:  bib, bat, bag, ban, big and bass.   The students will read the booklet----"The Big Trip".

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will print the letter "Bb".  Sight word sentences will also be printed.

Math----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of "Money".  The students will learn about the "Dime and Quarter".  The students will also learn how to count "Mixed Coins".  Addition problems will continue to be done.

Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn that "We Show Our Friends God's Love".  Then, the students will learn that "God Chose Mary to be the Mother of His Son, Jesus".

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will continue their study of the "Final Syllables---dle, -gle, -tle and -kle.  Then, the students will learn about the "Long "Oo" Sound" of  "ow" as in "low" and "oa" as in "boat". 

Reading----The First Grade students will read "Sight Words and Sight Word Sentences".  The stories----"Friends Forever" and "The Fox and the Stork"---- will be read.  The booklets----" A Jumping Pet" and "A Load of Stuff"----will be read.

English----The First Grade students will continue their study of "Verbs".

Spelling----The First Grade students will learn spelling words that have the "Long Ii Sound".

Math----The First Grade students will continue their study of "Money".  The students will be counting "Mixed Coins".  Addition and Subtraction "Rocket Math" Problems will continue to be done.

Religion----The First Grade students will learn about " We Celebrate the Sacraments" and "The Church Welcomes New Members".

Science----The students will learn about "Weather and Seasons".

Social Studies----The students will learn about "George Washington".

Reading----The Kindergarten students will continue to read "Sight Words".  Phonics words that contain the letters "Kk" and "Bb" will also be read.

Handwriting----The Kindergarten students will print the letters "Kk" and "Bb".  Phonics words and "Sight Word" sentences will also be printed.

Math----The Kindergarten students will learn about "Thirds" and "Fractions".  A unit on "money" will also be started.

Religion----The Kindergarten students will learn that "We Learn About God With Our Friends".

First Grade

Reading----The First Grade students will read the stories----"Friends Forever" and  "The Fox and the Stork".  The students will also read the booklet----"Let's Play" and "A Jumping Pet".

Religion----The First Grade students will learn that "We Gather Together to Worship" and "We Celebrate the Sacraments".
