Mrs. Eickhoff"s Kindergarten / First Grade Classroom

What's Happening This Week-----August 23rd Through August27th Kindergarten Phonics----The students have bee studying the sound that the letter "Ll" makes-----keyword----lion. The students know that the letter "Ll" is a consonant letter. Next, the Kindergarten students will learn the sound that the letter "Oo" makes----keyword----octopus. The students will learn that the letter "Oo" is a vowel letter. Reading----The Kindergarten students are learning to read color words and number words. The students are learning the color and number words by cheerleading these words. Handwriting----The Kindergarten students have been printing the letter "Ll'. The students are learning the correct way to sit, how to hold the pencil correcly and how to hold the paper with the other hand that does not hold the pencil. The students are learning that the letters sit on a line and do not float in the air. Next, the students will learn how to print the letter "Oo". Math----The Kindergarten students have been learning how to "Sort" objects---by color, size and shaape. The students have also learned the number "1"----count "1" object and how to printhow the number "1". Next, the students will learn the number "2"----putting "2" objects in a group and to print the number "2". The students learn these numbers through number poems and by skywriting the numbers in the air. The number poems are: One long stick, "!" is fun. Around and back on the railroad track, the train goes two, two two. Religion----The Kindergarten student have learned that "God Created the World". Next, the students will learn that "God Gave Us Light"----sun for daytime light and mon and stars for night time light. First Grade Reading----The First Grade students have been reading word family words. The word families are the "at" and "an" word family. The students have been reading the story, "The Hat", in their reader. The booklet "Jan's Cat" was also read by the students. In these small booklets, the "Vocabulary Words" that were introduced in the reader's story are reviewed through reading the booklet. The next story to be read will be "Sam and the Bag". The booklet to be read will be "Al and Max". The students will be reading the word family words "ap", "in" and"ig". Spelling- Last week the First Graders learned spelling words that contained the "Short Aa" sound. This week the students will learn spelling words that contain the "Short Ii" sound. This week's spelling words are: in, pig, did, sit, six and big. English----The First Graders will learn "What a Sentence Is?" and the "Naming Parts" of a sentence. Writing----The First Graders will write their own sentence about a hat that they colored. The students will also be writing their own spelling word sentences. Math----The First graders have been learning to read number words "zero through nine". Now, the students will learn the number words "ten through twelve". The students are learning the number words through cheerleading the number word. The students are also learning about "Addition". The students have studied the saying: part plus part equals whole. Addition "Rocket Math" worksheets are also being done by the First Graders. Religion----The First Graders have learned that "God is Our Father". Next, they willlearn that We Believe in the Blessed Trinity". Social Studies---The students have been studying "American Symbols". Science----The students have studied "Our Five Senses". Now, the students are studying "Living and Nonliving Things".
