What's Happening the Week of January 11th Through January 15th

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of the sound that the letter "Rr" makes----keyword----rabbit.  The students will learn that the letter "Rr" is a consonant letter.  Then, the students will learn the sound that the letter "Kk" makes----keyword----kite.  The students will learn that the letter "Kk" is a consonant letter.
Reading----The students will be reading phonics word lists and a phonics booklet.  Sight words will also be read.  The following sight words will be read:  I, see, a, to and from.  The following "Kk" words will be read:  kit, kiss, kin and ask.
Writing----The students will be writing phonics word sentences.  Through writing these phonics word sentences, the students will be introduced to English rules----such as----a sentence begins with a capital letter, makes sense and ends with a end mark.  Letter and word spacing will also be learned.
Handwriting----The students will be printing the letter "Kk' , their first and last name, and phonics words.
Math----The students will be "Identifying and Writing Numbers 15 and 16" and printing "Numbers 1-16".  The students will also be learning about "Equal Parts", "Exploring Symmetry", "Exploring Halves" and "Exploring Fourths".
Religion----In Chapter 17, the students will learn that "Jesus Grew Up in Nazareth".
Science----The students will continue their study of the Earth----"Water" and "Natural Resources".
Social Studies----The students will learn about "Martin Luther King, Jr.".
Crafts----The crafts this week will center around the winter theme and Martin Luther King, Jr.

First Grade

Phonics----The First Grade students will study the sound that the letters "Vv" and "Jj" make---keywords---vest and jar.  The "Floss Rule" and "Final Syllable -ble  will be studied.
Reading----The students will continue reading the story "Friends Forever".  Then, the booklet "A Jumping Frog" will be read.  Next, the story "The Fox and the Stork" will be read.  Later, the booklet----"A Load of Stuff" will be read.
English----The students will continue to review past lessons----nouns and pronouns, add "s" to make more than one, capitalize special nouns, contractions, the correct verb, is--are, was--were and add "ed" to the verb when telling about the past.  Then,"Adjectives" will be studied.
Spelling-----In Unit 21, Long "I" words will be studied.  The spelling words this week are:  time, like, kite, bike, white, five, drive, nine, hike, and ride.  The Challenge words are: write and invite.    The Special Words are:  could, would and two.  The Spelling Word Test will be on Friday, January 15th.
Writing----The students will be writing their own story about "Friends".  The students will also be writing their own spelling word sentences.
Handwriting----The students will be printing the letters "Vv" and "Jj".
