What's Happening the Week of November 5th Through November 8th

The K-1 Classroom had a wonderful time at their Halloween Party.  Thank you to everyone who sent snacks and to all the room mothers who helped at the Halloween Party, especially Christina Eickhoff.

Kindergarten

Phonics----The students will continue their study of the sound that the letter "Nn" makes---keyword---nest.  Then, the next letter of study will be the letter "Mm"---keyword----monkey.

Reading----The students will be reading color words, word lists, and a phonics booklet.

Handwriting----The students will be printing their first name, and the letters "Nn" and "Mm".

Math----The students will be reviewing ordinal numbers---first through tenth.  Then, the students will begin their study of "patterns"----color patterns, shape patterns, size and growing patterns. As a "Hands-On Activity"---the students will be gluing shapes onto a piece of paper.  The students will also be making a colored bead pattern necklace.

Religion----In Chapter 9, the students will learn that "God Made Us".

First Grade

Phonics----The students will be studying the sounds of the letter "Kk", "Cc" and "Bb".

Reading----The students will be reading the story "Boots For Beth".  Then, the students will read the story "Space Pup".  "Kk", "Cc" and "Bb" words will also be read.

English----The students will continue their study of "Nouns".  The students will be doing several---"Hands-On Activities"-----cut and glue pictures of "Nouns"---from magazines---and put the "Noun" pictures on a paper entitled either---"people, place, animal or thing".  Next, will learn about nouns that name one or more than one.  Later, the students will learn about "Special Nouns"----nouns that name special people and begin with a capital letter.
The students have an "English Journal"  in which they review or work on past English items that have been studied.  In the students "English Journal" this week, the students will be practicing "sentence rules and whether the sentence ends with a period or a question mark. These are "Hands-On Activities".

Spelling----The students will continue their study of the spelling words from Unit 13---"dr, gr, and tr words".  The spelling words this week are:  drip, trap, drop, drum, trip, grin, branch, all, from, and  do.  Unit 13's spelling word test will be on Friday, November 13th.  The students will be doing a "Hands-On Activity" in which they have to cut and glue squares with letters on the,m to spell this week's spelling words.

Writing----The students will be writing "Addition Stories", "Subtraction Stories", spelling word sentences, and their own story using the characters from the story "Boots For Beth".

Handwriting----The students will be printing pages in their "Handwriting Workbook".

Math----The students will begin a chapter on "Subtraction".  The students will be doing many "Hands-On Activities"---such as----using counters to model a subtraction story; reading a poem called "Six Little Froggies" and writing a subtraction sentence for each verse; holding up a subtraction flash card and the students have to make a subtraction story to go along with the subtraction flash card; and learning about subtracting "All or Zero" from a number---using counters to model the subtraction story.

The students also have a "Math Journal"----in which they review past problems or items that have been studied.  The students will be doing "related facts" problems and "fact families" problems.

Religion----In Chapter 7, the students will learn about "Ordinary Time" in the church year.  Then, in Chapter 8, the students will learn that "Jesus Had Many Followers".

Social Studies----Everyone will learn about "Thomas Edison" and "Using Directions".

Science----Everyone will learn about "Spiders" and "Keeping Healthy"----in the "Time For Kids" magazine.
