What's Happening the Week of August 19th Through August 23rd

The students have been learning the school rules.  Every morning the students say their "Morning prayers" and "The Pledge of Alligence to the Flag".  In order to say the "Morning Prayers and "The Pledge of Alligence", the students need to know which is their right hand.  The right hand is used both the "Morning Prayers and "The Pledge of Alligence".  In order for the students to learn about their right and left hand--a green sticker is placed on their right hand and a  red sticker is placed on their left hand.  The students has to put their left red hand behind their back, as they say the "Morning Prayer" and "The Pledge of Alligence".  The "Morning Prayers" are:  Sign of the Cross, Angel of God, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Our Father, and the morning prayer.  The students also played and sang along to the "Hokey Pokey"--to learn their right and left hand.

Kindergarten----The students are learning about the letter "Ll"---the letter "Ll's" sound----keyword---lion.  The students have learned that the letter "Ll" is a black letter consonant.  Next, the students will be learning about the letter "Oo"----keyword----octopus.  The students will learn that "Oo" is a vowel.

Reading----The students are learning to read color words----a skill that has to be mastered in Kindergarten.  The students have been learning how to read by cheerleading tthe color word----Give me a "r", give me a "e', give me a "d".  What does that spell?----red.  Hooray!!!

Handwriting----The students are learning how to print the letter "Ll".  The students are also learning how to print their first name, on a line.  The students are learning that all letter stand or sit on a line---no floaty letters.  The students will be learning how to print the letter "Oo".

Math----The students have been learning about "sorting by color".  The students used an ice-cube tray to sort "M and M's" , by color, into the various slots.  After, the sorting of the "M and M's" was complete, the students could eat their "M and M's"----yum!!! 
The students are also learning about the terms "alike, same, and different".  The number "1" as been learned---using a number poem----One long stick, one is fun!!!

Religion----In Chapter 1, the students will learn that "God Made All Things"

First Grade

Phonics----The students have been reviewing the letter sounds of the letters----"Nn" and "Oo".  Next, the students will review the letters "Tt", "Pp", and "Ii".

Reading----The students are reading the story "The Hat".  The students are learning the "short a" sound in words.  Then, the students will be reading the story "Sam and the Bag".  Through the story "Sam and the Bag"---the students will be learning the "ck" sound.

English----The students are learning ----"What a sentence is?".  Then, the students will learn about the two parts of a sentence----the naming part and the action part.

Spelling----This week's spelling words are "short a" words.  The spelling words this week are: an, bad, can, had, cat, and ran.  This week's spelling word test will be on Friday, August 23rd.

Writing----The students will be writing a sentence about a "Hat" picture that they have colored.  The students will also be writing spelling word sentences.

Handwriting----The students will be printing several pages in their "Handwriting Book". 

Math----The students have been doing many addition worksheets and "Rocket Math" worksheets.  The students are learning how to read a number sentence.  The students will learn the rule ----part plus part equals whole.

Religion----In Chapter 1, the students will learn that "God is Our Father".

Social Studies----Everyone is learning about our "American Symbols"----"The Flag", "The Bald Eagle" and the "Liberty Bell".
