What's Happening the Week of January 2nd Through January 4th

Kindergarten

Phonics----The students will continue their study of words that contain the letter "Kk"----keyword---kite.  Some "Kk" words will be:  kit, kiss, kin, and ask.  Then, the students will study words that contain the letter "Bb"----keyword---balloon.

Reading----The students will be reading word lists and the phonics booklet, "Frog Ran".  Color words will continue to be read.

Haandwriting----The students will be printing the letters "Kk" and "Bb".  Phonics word sentences will also be printed.  The students will be printing their first and last name. 

Math----The students will be learning about "pictographs", "bar graphs", and "equal parts". 

Religion----In Chapter 16, the students will learn that God the Father gave us Jesus.  The greatest gift that God has given to us is Jesus.  Jesus became one of us.

Science----The students will be learning about "Living and Nonliving" things, from their new science book.  The students will be learning the words "air", "light", "water" and "soil".  The students will be placing these words in the correct place , on a picture, in their science book.  The students will learn how plants are alike and different.  The students will also be making a booklet called "Living and Nonliving" things.  The students will look through a magazine, cut out pictures of living and nonliving things, and glue the pictures on the correct page in their booklet.  The pages will be entitled "living" and "nonliving".

First Grade

Phonics----The students will study words that contain the letter "Xx"---keyword---fox.  The combination "ir" will also be studied---keyword---shirt.

Reading----The students will continue reading the story "On the Way to the Pond".  The booklet, "Let's Play" will also be read.

English----The students will be reviewing "contractions", "sentence rules", "nouns", "pronouns", and "verbs".

Spelling----The students will be given a spelling test over the review unit, Unit 18.. Then, Unit 19, will be started.  The spelling words in Unit 19 are words with "th" and "wh".  The spelling words are:  that, with, which, path, when, this, them, bath, whip, then, think, and wheel.   The extra spelling words are:  where, what, and who.  Unit 19 Spelling word test will be on Monday, January 7th.  As you noticed, stating with this unit, Unit 19, there will be more spelling words to learn --- 12 spelling words, plus 3 extra words.

Writing----The students will write their own story using the characters from their reading book story "On the Way to the Pond".  The students will also to writing their own story about a snowman and a penguin.

Handwriting----The students will be printing pages in their "Handwriting Workbook".

Math---The students will be learning about related addition and subtraction facts---facts that contain the same numbers, such as:  2 + 3 = 5 and  5 - 3 = 2.  Then the students will learn about "fact families"---fact families have the same numbers in the facts, such as:  5 + 1= 6 and 6 -1 = 5 or 1 +5 =6 and 6 - 5 = 1.

Religion----In Chapter 16, the students will learn that "we celebrate the seven sacraments".

Science----The students will be starting their science study, in their new science books, with the study of "living and nonliving things".The students will learn that living things, like animals, need air, food, water, and a space to grow and change.  Plants need  sunlight and nutrients. Living things make new living things, like themselves.  The students will be making a booklet---"Living and Nonliving" things.  The students will have to look through a magazine and find pictures of "living" or "nonliving" things, and glue the pictures on the correct page in their booklet.

Social Studies----Everyone will be learning about "Cool Animals"----how animals suvive in the cold and "Lending a Hand" to help in your community.  These stories will be in the students "Time For Kids" magazine.
