What's Happening the Week of October 15th Through October 19th

Columbus Day----On Friday, October 12th----our classroom celebrated Columbus Day.  The students learned about Columbus, through a unit in their Social Studies book.  Many worksheets were done that pertained to Columbus.  The students also watched a Columbus Day cartoon, which explained Columbus' adventure.  For snack time, the students were treated to a Columbus Day cupcake----blue icing, to look like the Atlantic Ocean, with a ship on the top, made out of candy.  The students were also treated to blue jello,  in a cup, with a ship made out of candy, "floating" on the top of the blue Atlantic Ocean jello.  A candy shark was in the blue jello.  A special thanks to my daughter, who is Trent's mom, for making all the cute Columbus Day snacks!!!!

Field Trip----On Friday, October 19th, our K-1 Classroom will be going on our Field Trip .  Everyone is so excited!!

Book-It----Book-It coupons will be given to the students at the end of the months of October, November, December, January, February, and March.  All that the students, in the K-1 Classroom , have to do is to bring back the "Beary Award" papers as each homework assignment is completed. The "Book-It" coupon entitles each child to their own personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.

Kindergarten

Phonics----The students will continue their study of the letter "Pp"---keyword---pig.  Then, the students will be studying the letter "Aa"---keyword---apple.  The students will be doing many "Pp" and "Aa" worksheets and reading many "Pp" and "Aa" words.

Reading----The students will be reading many "Pp" and "Aa" words.  Towards the end of this school week, the students will be reading the booklet called---"Hot, Hot, Hot".  The students will be bringing this booklet home to read, as a nightly reading assignment.  Please help your child read their homework assignment and sign and return the "Beary Award" homework paper and return that "Beary Award" paper to school.  The booklet, "Hot, Hot, Hot" may be kept at home, to be re-read from time-to-time. The students will also be reading color words.

Handwriting----The students will be printing their first name, and the letters "Pp" and "Aa".

Math----The students will continue learning about the number "10".  The students will be doing dot-to-dot worksheets, using numbers from 1-10.  The students will learn that numbers come in a certain order.  The students will also be learning about the terms---over, on, and under.

Religion----In Chapter 9, the students will learn that "God Made Us".  God made each one of us special.

First Grade

Phonics----The students will be reading words with the letter "Bb", "Mm", and "Ee".

Reading----The students will continue to read the story "Boots For Beth" and doing the workbook pages that go along with that story.  The booklet, "Ben" will be read---containing "The Words To Remember" from the story "Boots For Beth".  Then, the story "Space Pup" will be read.  Through the story "Space Pup", the students will be reading many words with the short "Uu" vowel sound.

English----The students will continue their study of "Nouns".  The students will be learning that "Nouns" are naming words that name people, animals, things and places. 

Spelling----In Unit 14, the students will be learning words that end with "nt" and "mp".  This week's spelling words are:  ant, jump, tent, lamp,, bump, went and pants.   The extra spelling words are:  want, or and were.  This week's spelling test will be on Thursday, October 18th.

Handwriting----The students will be printing the letters "w", "X", and "v".  The students will also doing printing pages pertaining to "Guardian Angel", "Saints", "Scared Scripture" and "Heaven".

Writing----The students will be writing their own spelling word sentences.  The students will also be writing their own story using the characters from the "Space Pup" story.  The students will also be writing their own stories about "Halloween Characters" such as a witch, a bat, etc.

Math----The students will be learning about "pictographs" and "bar graphs"..  Then, the students will start a unit on "ones and tens".  "Rocket Math" worksheets will continue to be done. 

Religion-----In Chapter 9, the students will learn that Jesus died and rose to a new life. In "Growing in Love" booklet, the students will learn that God makes us all special.

Social Studies----Everyone will be learning about our "Earth"----"Water and Land".  Then, everyone will be learning about "Map Keys" and "Weather".  "Time For Kids" magazine will also be read.
