What's Happening the Week of September 17th Through September 21st

Kindergarten

Phonics----The students will be learning the letter "Hh" and it's sound----keyword----hat.  The students will be sounding out the words:  l--o--g   and   h---o---g.  The students will be doing many "Hh" worksheets

Reading----The students will continue reading color words and the phonics words  l---o---g  and  h--o--g.

Handwriting----The students will be printing the letter "Hh" and their first name.

Math-----The students will continue their study of the number "6", the triangle shape, and the color and color word "green".  The students will also be reviewing the circle shape.  Then, color patterns will be studied.

Religion----In Chapter 5, the students will learn that God made all the animals.  All of the animals are God's gift to us.

First Grade

Phonics-The students will be studying the sound of the letters "Ss" and "Dd".  The suffix -s will be studied.  The students will be learning that when you add the suffix -s to the root word , that makes the root word mean more than one.  The "at" word family will also be studied.  Short "Oo" words will be also  be studied.

Reading----The students will be reading tthe story "Todd's Box".  Many workbook pages introducing short "Oo" words will be done.  Then, the booklet "A Sack For You" will be read.  Then, the story "All That Corn" will be read.

English----The students will continue learning about question sentences.  Then, the students have to decide if the sentence is a "telling" sentence or a :question" sentence.  A game will be played in which I read a sentence and each student raises a popscicle stick that has a perod or a question mark it, depending what kind of sentence each student thinks was just read.  Then, the students will be learning about "Question Words", the words that begin an asking sentence.

Spelling----In Unit 8, the students will be learning "Short E Words".  This week's spelling words are:  yes, let, red, ten, bed, get, and messy. The extra words are:  for, they, and have.  This week's spelling word test is on Friday, September 21st.

Writing-The students will be writing their own story using the characters from "Todd's Box" story.  The students will also be writing their own spelling word sentences.  The students must remember the sentence rules----begin each sentence with a capital letter , have a naming and action part, make sense, and end with an end mark.

Handwriting----The students will be printing the letters "e", "F", "f", and "G".  The students will also be printing pages in their "Learning Our Catholic Faith" workbook.

Math----The students will continue doing addition "Rocket Math" worksheets.  Other addition worksheets will be done.  The students will also be learning about related addition facts such as---1+3=4 or 3+1=4: sums of 9 and 10; sums of 11 and 12: and other names for numbers---such as 8=2+6 or 8= 4+4.

Religion----In Chapter 5, the students will be learning that Jesus teaches us about love.

Social Studies----Everyone will be learning about life then and now in a unit called "Families and Change"..   Then, the students will learn about "Thomas Edison", "Our Country", and "Sorting Into Groups".

UP and Coming Event in K-1  Classroom:  Next week, in Social Studies, our K-1 Classroom will be learning about Johnny Applesseed , through a unit in our Social Studies book.  The K-1 Classroom will be celebrating Johnny Appleseed's birthday, on Wednesday,  September 26th.  Each K-1 student may wear a Johnny Appleseed costume to school on that day.  Many "apple" activites will be done---such as---apple sorting, apple tasting, apple conting, Johnny Appleseed worksheets, listening to and watching a Johnny Appleseed movie.  A day full of "Apple Fun".
