What's Happening the Week of October 1st Through October 5th

Kindergarten

Phonics----The students will continue learning about the letter "Tt" sound---keyword--tent.  Then, the students will learn about the letter "Pp's" sound---keyword---pig. 

Reading----The students will be reading color words, and the phonics words---log, hog, hot, pot, and top.

Handwriting----The students will be printing  their first name, and the letters "Tt" and "Pp".
Math----The students continue working with patterns.  Then, the terms above below, top, middle and bottom will be studied.  The "triangle" shape will continue to be studied.  The numbers "8" and "9" will be counted and written.   

Religion----In Chaptet 7, the students will learn about "Ordinary Time" in the church year.  "Saints" will also be studied.  The students will learn that a saint lived their life loving God and helping others.

First Grade

The First Grade students will be dong "Achievement Testing" this week.

Phonics----The students will be reading words that contain the letters "Kk", "Cc", and "Bb".

Reading----The students will be reading the story "Dan's Pet".  Then, the students will be reading the story "Boots for Beth".

English----The students will be deciding "What kind of sentence it is?"----a telling or an asking sentence.  Then, the students will be reviewing the sentence rules, and end marks.  Next, "nouns" will be studied. 

Spelling----In Unit 10, the students will be reviewing short vowel words.  This week's spelling words are:  him, hot, man, men, top, cut, and cabin.  The extra spelling words are:  his, has, and as.  This week's spelling test will be on Friday, October 5th.

Handwriting----The students will be printing the letters "i", "J", "K", "Y", "y", and "Z".

Writing----The students will be writing their own spelling word sentences.  The students will also be  writing their own stories using the characters from the stories of "Dan's Pet" and "Boots for Beth".

Math----The students will be reading addition stories and writing additon sentences.  Tally marks and picture graphs will be studied.  The students will continue to make "additon flash cards" and take them home for nightly practice.

Religion----The students will continue thier study of "Saints" in Chapter 7.  Then, in Chapter 8, the students will learn that Jesus' followers believed that He was the Son of God.  Jesus taught His followers how to pray "The Lord's Prayer".

Social Studies----Everyone one will learn about "Our World".  Earth is made up of land and water.  Then, the students will learn about the different types of land and water.  Map keyes will also be studied.
