What's Happening the Week of March 19th Through March 22nd

March 16th was great fun for our K-1 Classroom.  The "Leprechaun" came for St. Patrick's Day, and left the students a "pot of gold".  The boys and girls made St> Patrick.s Day hats and did colored St. Patrick's Day color sheets. Everyone enjoyed a St. Patrick's Day cupcake.

Kindergarten

Phonics----The students will contiune their study of words that contain the letter "Qq".  The keyword for the letter "Qq" is---quilt.  The students learned that the letter "Qq" is always with the letter "Uu" as in "QU".  Next,  the students will learn about long vowel sounds.  The students will be learning a new phonics rule----"A vowel not followed by a consonant is long, coded it with a macron".  Some long vowel sound words will be:  so, no, hi, he, me, we, go, and be.  Then, the students will be studying the sound that "ck" makes----keyword---duck.  Some "ck" words will be:  brick, duck, rock. black, lock, clock, sock, truck, neck,and sack.

Reading----The students will be reading word lists, word families, and phonics booklets and stories.  Reading worksheets will also be done.

Math----The students will learn about comparing by height---shorter and taller, counting to 100, and exploring tens and ones.  Addition worksheets will also be done.

HandwritingThe students will be printing the letter "Qq", their first and last name, word family words, and handwriting book pages.

Religion----In Chapter 26, the students will be learning that Jesus is our friend.  Jesus spent time with His friends.  Jesus liked His friends.  Jesus is always with us.  We can thank Jesus for all that He has done for us by praying, being kind, helping others, sharing, and being fair.

First Grade

Phonics----The students will be learning about the "igh" and "ight" sound---keyword ----knight.

Reading----The students will be reading the story "The Story of a Blue Bird", pp. 8-30.  Then, the students will read the story, "Frog and Toad All Year", pp. 38-56.

English----The students will be learning about a book title.  In a book title the first word, last word, and all important words begin with a capital letter.  A book title in underlined.  Then, the students will be reviewing past items learned in English---nouns, verbs, exclamation marks, titles before names, book titles, commas, days of the week and months.

Spelling----In Unit 31, the students will be studying about words that end in "s".  Add "s" to a word to makes it mean more than one.  The spelling words, this short school week, are:  jet, jets, frog, frogs, tail, tails, week, weeks, gate, and gates.  The bonus words are:  wagon, wagons, mother, father, and  more.  This week's spelling test will be on Thursday, March 22nd.

Handwriting----The students will continue to print pages in their handwriting workbooks.

Writing----The students will be writing their own stories in their "Reading and Handwriting" Journal.  Also, the students will be writing a story using the characters from their reading book story, "The Story of a Blue Bird".

Science----Everyone will be studying about our planet "Earth" .  The students will be learning that Earth is make up of "Rocks" and "Soil", and different kinds of soil. 

Social Studies----Everyone will be reading and learning from their magazine "Time Fro Kids".
