What's Happening the Week of February 27th Through March 2nd

Kindergarten

Phonics----The students will continue their study of "Jj" words---keyword---jar.  Some "Jj" words will be:  just, jest, jazz, jet, jam, jug, jog, job, jot, and jump.  Then, the students will begin the study of words that contain a "Xx".  Some "Xx" words will be :   fox, ax, text, tax, flex, fax, flax, ox, fix, fox, box and six----The boys and girls will be reading word lists, word families, and a phonics booklet called, "Pig's Jet".

Reading----The students will be reading word lists, word families, and a phonics booklet called "Pig's Jet".

Handwriting----The students will be printing the letters "Jj" and "Xx".  Also, the student's first and last name will be practiced.  The students will also be printing word family words.

Math----The students will be starting a unit on time----time sequence  (first, next, last), calendar (days, weeks, yesterday, today, and tomorrow}, seasons, and more time, or less time.  Addition worksheets will also be done.

Religion----In Chapter 23, the students will learn that we pray as Jesus prayed.  Jesus showed us how to pray.  Jesus taught us the prayer----"Our Father".

First Grade

Phonics----The students this week will study the sound of "Yy"=a long "i" as in the word sky.  The long "Ee" sound will also be studied as in the words---sleep and eat.

Reading----The boys and girls will be reading the story, "On the Job With Dr. Martha Smith", pp. 154-177.  Then, the studentsa will read the story, "Little Bear's Friend", pp. 184-206

English----The boys and girls will be learning that the name of the days of the week and the name of the months all begin with a capital letter.

Spelling----Unit 27  Spelling word test was today, Monday, February 27th.  Then, Unit 28 will be started.  In Unit 28, the students will learn words that contain the long "Ee" sound.  Unit 28 words are:  feel, eat, need, read, deep, sleep, neat, keep, feed and mean. The bonus words are:  peanut, please, been, goes, and never. The spelling test will be on Friday, March 2nd.

Writing----The students will be writing a description about a cat,  after coloring a cat picture.  Also, the students will be writing their own stories using the characters from the stories  "On the Job Wth Dr. Martha Smith" and "Little  Bear's Friend".  The students will begin a "Reading and Writing" Journal ,   in which they will be writing their own stories.

Science----Everyone will be learning about "How Animals Need Plants", "How Animals Help Plants", and "How People Need Plants and Animals".

Social Studies----Towards the end of this week and the beginning of next week, everyone will be learning about Dr. Seuss.

Bible Stories----Everyone , every Friday, will be listening to a Bible story and then coloring a worksheet that goes with the Bible story.

Up and Coming News------The Kindergarteners will be starting a unit on "Nursery Rhymes".
