What's Happening the Week of January 4th Through January 6th

I hope that everyone had a blessed and wonderful Christmas vacation.  Happy 2012 New Year!!!

I want to thank everyone for all the wonderful Christmas presents.  Thank you for thinking about me at Christmas time.

Kindergarten

Phonics----The Kindergarten students will continue their study of words that contain the "Uu" sound.  Then, the students will begin the study of words that contain the letter "Zz"---keyword--zebra.  Some "Zz" words that will be studied will be:  fizz, fuzz, zip, zig, zap, and buzz.

Reading----The students will be reading word lists, word family words, and a phonics booklet----"Zip".

Handwriting----The students will be printing the letters "Uu" and "Zz".  The students will also be printing their first and their last name, and word family words.

Math----The students will continue their study of addition.  The students will be having addition homework problems.  A "Mickey Mouse" mat and foam shapes will be used to do addition problems.  Please return the "Mickey Mouse" mat and foam shapes to school with your child the next school day---thanks.

Religion----In Chapter 17, the students will learn that Jesus grew up in a family---"The Holy Family".  Mary and Joseph taught Jesus how to do many things.Jesus helped the Holy Family in their work.The Holy Family did things together and showed love for one another.

First Grade

Phonics----The students will be studying the the final syllables---"ble", "fle", "ple", "dle", "tle", and "gle".

Reading----The students will continue the workbook pages that go along with the story, "Friends Forever".  Then, the students will begin reading the story, "The Fox and the Stork", pp. 144-162.  Through this story, the students will be introduced to words that contain the "oa" ---as in road --sound, and "ow"--- as in low--sound.  The phonics booklet, "A Jumping Frog" and "A Load of Stuff", will also be read.  "Treasure Words" will also be studied.

English----Sentence rules, nouns, pronouns, and verbs, will be reviewed.

Spelling----In Unit 20, the students will be learning long "a" words.  The spelling words this week are:  came, make, brave, bake, take, name, late, gave, shape, game, parade, erase, out, about, and over.  Unit 20 Spelling Word Test will be on Monday, January 9th.

Handwriting----The students will be printing the letters "x", "v" and "W".

Writing----The students will be writing spelling word sentences and their own stories using the characters from the stories in their their reading book----"Friends Forever" and "The Fox and the Stork".

Science----Everyone, this last half of the school year, will be learning many Science facts,in our Science books.  Science will be the main area of study this last half of the school year, as oppossed to Social Studies, which was the main area of study the first half of the school year.  Social Studies will be study at times still, when we learn about Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Dr. Suess.

In Science, everyone will learn about our "Five Senses".  Then, the students will learn about "Living and Nonliving Things".
