What's Happening the Week of January 23rd Through January 27th

Today, Monday, January 23rd, is our "100th Day of School".  The students made "100th Day" hats and necklaces, counted many items through 100, listened to a "100th Day" stories, and did many "100th Day" activities.

Kindergarten

Phonics----The students will continue the study of words that contain the letter "Ee"---keyword---elephant. The students will learn that the letter "Ee" is a vowel.  Some "Ee" words to be studied are:  leg, net, tell, spell, rest, step, nest, get, help, ten, and mess.  The next letter of study will be the letter "Yy"---keyword---yarn.  The students will learn that the letter "Yy" is a consonant.  Some "Yy" words are:  yam, yak, yell, yap, yes, yelp, yen, and yet.

Reading----The students will be reading word lists and the phonics booklet, "Ben Is Ten".

Handwriting----The students will be printing their first and last name, the letter "Ee", and the letter "Yy".

Math----The students will be learning about numbers from 21 through 31.  The students will learn that the number 21 is make up of two groups of ten and one item left over.  Then, a unit on money will be started.

Religion----This week the students will be learning that God made us to be together.  The students will be learning in their "Growing In Love" Religion Book.

First Grade

Phonics----The students will be learning about the ghost letters---"wr", "kn", and "gn".  In these combination of letters, the first letter is quiet like a ghost----so the name ghost letters.    The students will also to learning about the digraphs "ai", "ay", and "ea".  The word families---"ide", "ine", and "ope" will also be studied.

Reading----The students will continue the workbook pages that go along with the story, "A Bed Full of Cats", pp. 8-27.  Then, the story "Me on the Map", pp. 36-58, will be read.  Through the story "Me on the Map" and the workbook pages that go with the story, the students will be introduced to "long a" words.  Treasure Words will also be read.  Then, the story, "At Home Around the World", pp. 66-89, will be read.  Through the story, "At Home Around the World", and the workbook pages that go along with the story, the students will be introduced the the "y" at the end of a word making the "long e" sound, as in the word----jelly.

English----The students will continue the study of adjectives.  Then, words that have the opposite meaning will be studied.

Spelling----The students will be taking a spelling test over Unit 22 words on Tuesday, January 24th.  Then, Unit 23 spelling words will be studied.  In Unit 23, the students will study words that contain the "long e" sound.  Unit 23 spelling words are:  he, see, she, tree, me, feet, we, be, green, and peek.  The bonus words will be:  three, street, good, back, and into.  Unit 23 Spelling Test will be on Friday, January 27th.

Hnadwriting----The students will be printing on several pages in their "Handwriting Workbook".  The students will be printing the letters "z and "r", and several prayers----Grace Before Meals prayer, Grace After Meal prayer, and the Hail Mary prayer.

Writing-----The students will be writing their own stories using the characters from the reading stories----"Me on the Map", and "At Home Around the World".

Science----Everyone will be learning about "Animals"---what animals need to live, and the different groups of animals.
