What's Happening the Week of Decamber 12th Through December 16th

Everyone did a wonderful job singing in the OLOS Christmas Caroling Program.

The Christmas Party gift exchange gifts can be brought to school at any time before our Classroom Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 21st.  Girls should buy for girls, and boys should buy for boys.  Gifts should be of $5 value.

Kindergarten

Phonics----The students will continue their study of words that contain the letter "Kk".  Then, words that contain the letter "Bb" will be studied.  Some "Bb" words will be:  bib, bat, bag, ban, bass, and big.  The "ap" words family will also be studied.

Reading----The students will read phonics word lists, phonics booklets, and "ap" family words.

Handwriting----The students will be printing the letters "Kk" , "Bb", and their first name.

Math----The students will be learning to identify the numbers 19 and 20.  Then, the students will be reviewing that numbers come in a certain order, ordinal numbers first through tenth.  Next, the students will learn about the  "joining" of two groups of objects.

Religion----In Chapter 15, the students will learn that God chose Mary to be the mother of his son, Jesus.  Mary is our mother, too.  Mary is the greatest of all the saints.

First Grade

Phonics----The students will be learning about the "oo" sound, as in the word "hook"; "oo" as in the word "tooth";  words with the letter "Jj"; and words that contain the final syllable "ble".

Reading----The students will contain reading the story "Tomas Rivera" , and  completing the workbook pages that go along with the "Tomas Rivera" story.  Then, the students will read the story , "On the Way to the Pond". In this story, the students will be introduced to words that contain the sounds of "ir" and "ur".  Treasure words will also be read and studied.

English----The students will continue studying contractions.  Then, words that look alike, but have different meanings, will be studied.  There will also be a review of verbs, is and are, and the parts of a sentence.

Spelling----In Unit 19, the students will be introduced to words with "th" and "wh".  This week's spelling words are  that, with, which, path, when, this, them, bath, whip, then, think, wheel, where, what, and what.  There will be 15 spelling words a week from here on out until the end of the school year. This week's spelling test will be on Friday, December 21st.

Handwriting----The students will be writing words that have something to do with Christmas.  Then, the students will be printing several other pages in their handwriting workbook.

Writing----The students will be writing their own stories using the characters from the stories of "Tomas Rivera" and "On the Way to the Pond".  Spelling word sentences,  will also be written.

Social Studies----Everyone will be reading the K-1 magazine, "Time For Kids".
