What's Happening the Week of September 19th Through September 23rd

Kindergarten

Phonics----The students will continue their study of words with the letter "Tt".  Then, the students will study the letter "Pp"---keyword-pig.  Some "Pp" words are:  pot, top, hop, and pop,  The students will be doing many worksheets, using the letter "Pp".

Reading----The students will be reading phonics words that contain the letter"Pp" and color words.

Handwriting---The students will be printing the letters "Tt" and "Pp", and their first name.

Math----The students will continue their study of a triangle shape.  Patterns---transfer of patterns, repeating color patterns, and size and shape patterns--will also be studied.  The number 6 will be learned, by the use of the number 6 poem----down to a loop, six rolls a hoop.  The color word brown will also be read and some brown worksheets will be done.

Religion-----In Chapter 6---The Church Year---the students will learn that we celebrate God's love all throughout the year.  We use God's gifts of water, light, flowers, and plants when we celebrate God,s love in church.

First Grade

Phonics----The students, this week, will be learning many word family words.  The word families to be studied are:  "op", "ot", and "all".  Words containing the letters "Ss", and "Dd", will also be studied.

Reading----The students will continue their study of the story "Todd's Box".  Then, the students will begin the story, "All That Corn".  In the story, "All That Corn", the students will be introduced to the "all" word family.  The booklet, "One For Me"  will also be read.

Spelling----In Unit 9, the students will be introduced to short "u" words.  This week's spelling words are:  us, sun, but, fun, bus, run, puppy, are, one, and there.This week's spelling test will be on Friday, September 23rd.

English----The students will continue their study of sentences---a telling sentence tells something and ends with a period; and a question sentence asks something, and ends with a question mark.  Then , the students will learn about proofreading---proofreading is to check to see if the sentences begin with a capital letter and end with the correct end mark.  Next, the students will learn about nouns.  The students will learn that a noun names people, animals, things and places.

Handwriting----The boys and girls will be doing several printing pages in their handwriting workbook. The students will be printing the letters, "c", "D", and "d".

Writing----The students will be writing spelling word sentences--remembering the sentence rules---a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with an end mark.  The students will also be writing a story about a "beehive", and another story about a "ball".

Social Studies----Everyone will continue the study of maps and map symbols, and directions.  Then, the calendar will be studied.  The students will learn that the calendar is made up of months, weeks, days, and holidays.  Later, on September 27th, the K-1 Class, will start the study of Johnny Appleseed.  The students will learn that Johnny Appleseed was a real man named John Chapman.  Many fun and interesting activities will be done in our K-1 Classroom, for the Johnny Appleseed Celebration on September 27th.
