What's Happening the Week of September 12th Through September 16th

Kindergarten

Phonics----The boys and girls will continue the study of the letter "Hh".  Then the students will learn about thre letter "Tt"---keyword-tent.  Some "Tt" words will be:  hot, tot, lot, and got.  The students will be doing many worksheets, while learning about the letter."Tt".

Reading----The students will continue reading color words.  Phonics words----log, hog, hot, got, tot, and lot--will also be read.

Handwriting----The boys and girls will continue writing their first name.  The letter "Tt" will also be practiced.

Math----The students will continue the study of patterns---color patterns, shape patterns, size and growing patterns, and the transfer of patterns.  The students will also be learning about the number 5, the color purple, and the triangle shape.  Number 5's poem is----short neck, belly fat, five wears a hat.  Triangle's poem is---I have three points, I have three sides, like tents, and tee-pee's, and jack-o-lantern eyes.  Go up the hill, then down and back, and don't fall down like Jill and Jack.  Points and sides, one, two, three, Trudy Triangle. That's me!

Religion----In Chapter 5, the students will learn that God made the animals.  God cares and loves us.  God filled the world with animals.

First Grade

Phonics----The students will be learning about the letters, "Aa", "Zz", "Ss", and the suffix "s".  The students will be reading many words containing those letters.

Reading----The boys and girls will read "Todd's Box".  The students will be doing workbook pages containing words with the short "o" sound as in the word "hot".  The booklet, "A Sack For You", will also be read.

English----The students will be reviewing telling and question sentences.  Then,  the students will learn about nouns.  The students will learn that nouns are naming words that name people and animals.

Spelling----In Unit 8, short "e" words will be studied.  The spelling words this week are:  yes, let, red, ten, bed, get, messy, for, they, and have.  The students will also be doing workbook pages that contain the short "e" words.  A proofreading worksheet will also be done, on which the students will need to correct the miss-spelled spelling words.  This week;s spelling test will be on Friday, September 16th.

Handwriting----The students will be doing several workbook pages in their handwriting workbook.

Writing----The students will be writing sentences the contain some of this week's spelling words.  The students will also be writing  stories.

Social Studies----Everyone will be learning about maps and map keys.  A map is a drawing of a place and the map key uses symbols that stand for real things.  The students will also be learning about directions---north, south, east, and west.  Then, the students will learn about a calendar.  A calendar shows months, weeks, days, and holidays.
